Oregon rules out the mailbox agent entirely

An Oregon LLC renews itself each year on its formation anniversary, and the assumed business name it may trade under renews on its own short cycle. The Corporate Activity Tax recurs on receipts, and its return travels to the Department of Revenue on its own calendar. Both processing questions sit unread at this snapshot, and the sheet says so instead of guessing.

the rest of this note

The agent rule is the sharp edge: the registered office may not be a commercial mail receiving agency, a mail forwarding business or a virtual office, a researched refusal printed with its source. A resident individual whose business office is the registered office may serve, and the company qualifies for its own seat as well.

scales with revenue

Oregon calls it the Corporate Activity Tax, collected by Oregon Department of Revenue. It follows revenue with no annual minimum, so no yearly figure can stand in for it.

How long it lasts

2 years

Renew every two years. The renewal application and fee must be filed within the 30 days before each second anniversary of registration; failing to do so is grounds for administrative cancellation of the registration. The Secretary of State must send the registrant's authorized representative a renewal notice at least 30 days before the deadline (ORS 648.017).

What the filing protects

no exclusive right

Registering an assumed business name discloses who is behind the name; it grants no exclusive right and carries no infringement remedy of its own. It does have a real practical effect: because an active assumed business name is part of the ORS 63.094 distinguishability test, the state will not register a later entity or assumed name that is not distinguishable from it while yours stays current.

Where to search existing names

sos.oregon.gov

Oregon keeps assumed business names in the same registry as corporations and LLCs, so the standard Business Name Search returns them alongside entities. An assumed business name appears as an ABN row with its own active or inactive status.

Where do these figures come from?

Every figure on this sheet renders from the pinned dataset snapshot, and each card links the page its own figure came from. This list collects those pages in one place, with the duplicates removed and the agency named.

The rule behind every figure here, and what a card does when one cannot be verified, sits on how a figure gets verified.
