An assumed or fictitious name is disclosure only and grants no exclusive right. Unlike most states in this dataset, Virginia keeps assumed names out of the entity-name distinguishability screen: § 13.1-1012(E) provides that the use of assumed or fictitious names under Chapter 5 of Title 59.1 does not affect the LLC naming chapter, so a registered assumed name does not block a later entity name and an entity name does not block a later assumed name.

Certificates of assumed or fictitious name are filed with and searchable through the State Corporation Commission's Clerk's Information System. Because the 2020 reform centralized filing, there is one statewide record rather than 133 separate circuit-court indexes.
